This Calculator Weighs Your Stress in Actual Pounds

Try this stress calculator to see how heavy your burden really is — because there's no better motivation to slow down than being told your stress weighs as much as a grizzly bear.

Feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders? It's actually probably closer to the weight of a panda or a lion. To put the load of your burden in perspective, a British insurance firm created an interactive calculator that measures the physical weight of the stress in your life.

In a series of questions, the calculator asks you to rate your stress levels on a scale of 1 to 10 when it comes to money, health, career, family, and world affairs, as well as how these cross over — for example, how much financial stress is connected to your family versus your health.

When Liverpool Victoria (LV=), the insurance firm that created the tool, tasked 2,000 adults with trying the calculator, they found the largest source of stress was money. That trend follows suit here in the United States, where money and finances have been the top stressors since 2007, according to the American Psychological Association's annual Stress in America survey. In fact, 72 percent of American adults say they feel stressed about money at least some of the time, while 22 percent rate their financial stress over the past month at a whopping 8, 9, or 10 on a 10-point scale.

Across all areas of life, though, LV= reports that the average weight of worry is 496 pounds — the equivalent weight of a panda, gorilla, or tiger. And while this tool obviously shouldn't be used to make any major medical decisions, nothing says you need to relax quite like picturing your stress load as a bone-crushing, quarter-ton jungle animal.
