What is it? Water + acetic acid = vinegar, an age-old germ-fighting superhero. "Acetic acid is being used by some companies to replace harsher chemicals in cleaners," says Samara Geller, a cleaning products analyst at the Environmental Working Group (EWG). In products like these, distilled white vinegar is a worthy substitute for bleach, which can be irritating to the eyes and skin, Geller says.
