Oz Says: Two big strikes against this trendy additive: There are precious few tests on it, and although some small ones have shown modest sex-drive benefits and a little less menopausal discomfort, there's no way to know if the product you're buying has the same type of maca that was researched.
Maca comes in red, yellow, and black varieties, each with different levels of about a dozen active compounds, says Debra M. Palmer, PhD, an associate professor in the department of nutritional sciences at Rutgers University. Studies don't say which type was used, and products don't identify which they contain, either. So basically: It's a gamble.
