9 Surprising Ways to Eat Hummus

Because baby carrots are so basic.

Hummus is one of those things we tend to take for granted. As much as we love guacamole and the endless amount of omega-3s we down during Taco Tuesdays, the avocado-based dip doesn't boast quite as many benefits as good ol' fashioned chickpeas.

With a base of beans and seeds, hummus is full of heart-healthy benefits. And considering 2016 was deemed the International Year of Pulses by the United Nations, it might be time to give them a real shot. Especially since a March 2016 review of 21 studies found adults can actually lose weight by adding a daily serving into their diet.

So, would you rather eat 1.5 cups of beans per week, or two tablespoons of hummus each day to take advantage of their veggie superpowers? Easy question, we know. And you can do a whole lot more than use it as a dip.

Here are nine other ways to reap the benefits of the Mediterranean diet staple.
