Hayden Panettiere Says Her Postpartum Depression Battle Has Made Her a Better Mom

She checked into a treatment facility last May.

In a new interview with Good Morning America on Thursday, Hayden Panettiere gave fans an update on her nearly two-year battle with postpartum depression.

In May 2016, Panettiere confirmed via Twitter that she had entered a treatment facility for PPD. "It takes you a while and you feel off, you don't feel like yourself," she told GMA's Lara Spencer, who also suffered from PPD. "Women are so resilient and that's the incredible thing about them," Hayden continued. "I think I'm all the stronger for it. I think I'm a better mom because of it because you never take that connection for granted."

Panettiere and her fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Kaya, in December 2014. Panettiere first revealed she had PPD on an episode of Live With Kelly and Michael the following September and voluntarily checked into a treatment center in October. She also dealt with her real-life struggles on the small screen, as her Nashville character Juliette Barnes also battled PPD.

"I think it helped me identify what was going on and to let women know that it's OK to have a moment of weakness," she said of her Nashville role on GMA. "It doesn't make you a bad person, doesn't make you a bad mother. It makes you a very strong, resilient woman. You've just got to let it make you stronger."
