Your Perfect Wake-Up Stretch

Think of your body as a sponge—and twists like this seated pose as a way to wring out fatigue. "I find it more energizing than a cup of coffee," says physician and yoga instructor Sara Gottfried, M.D.

  1. Sit cross-legged on your bed or floor and place your right hand on the outside of your left thigh. Place your left hand behind your back.
  2. Inhale and lengthen through your spine. Exhale, press your right hand into your thigh, and gently twist to your left.
  3. Hold for five deep breaths, growing taller with each inhale and twisting a little deeper with each exhale.

Repeat on the other side.

To keep your spine long and straight, imagine a string is pulling the top of your head to the ceiling.
