First of all, don't worry: No sharks were harmed in the making of this product. So now that we have that out of the way, what in the world is Shark Sauce and why is everyone talking about it?
The serum has the beauty world in a tizzy for its ability to not only brighten and soothe skin, but also tackle those ever-frustrating dark spots. Shark Sauce's creator — Chel Cortes, a Reddit user with a DIY and science background — just wanted a simple skincare product that didn't have any unnecessary ingredients, according to Racked. So, like any good DIY-er with a vision, she created a formula of her own. Here are the ingredients behind her popular skin serum:
- 5 percent niacinamide (vitamin B3) and 3 percent N-ccetyl glucosamine for hyperpigmentation
- panthenol (vitamin B5) to improve the skin barrier
- licorice root and green tea extract to soothe and brighten skin
- hyaluronic acid and sodium lactate for hydration
- sea kelp bioferment to fight acne and moisturize
After posting the recipe in the Asian Beauty subreddit, Cortes and her creation quickly became so popular that she decided to meet the demand and turn it into a full-blown product (with an amazing name and logo, we might add). A 30 mL bottle runs just $29.99. After using this product, both the creator and her new fanbase claim they saw patches of freckles and dark spots disappear within the first month. They also say it abolished acne and took years off their faces.
If you're worried about a time-consuming application process, don't: According to Shark Sauce's website, all you need to do is apply several drops to your just-washed face and follow up with moisturizer.
While most of the ingredients in Shark Sauce are undeniably good for your skin, we haven't tried it yet, so we can't confirm how well it works. But with the bottles selling like hotcakes, we've yet to hear any complaints.
